# Step-Index Fiber

Step-index fibers have a piecewise-constant refractive index profile — a 
core of index $n_1$ surrounded by cladding of index $n_2 < n_1$.
This chapter computes their guided and leaky modes, starting from exact 
semi-analytical solutions and progressing to finite element methods.
